15 year old, Miley Cyrus is determined to serve as a role model for young teens not only through her music, but through her lifestyle. This past week, Cyrus started her first eBay auction with proceeds going to her charity of choice. She contributed clothes, jewelry, autographed goodies, and even a chance to meet Miley herself, giving kids the chance to step into the shoes of Miley Cyrus without having to purchase new duds. The auction raised more than $58,000. Even if Perez doesn’t like her, I do! Good job Miley!

Matt Damon has started his own clean water movement to bring attention to the water crisis in Africa. He is the co-creator of H2O Africa Project, started in order to garner funds and start clean water plans in Africa’s poorest regions.

Even the hot stars of Gossip Girl are doing their part to save the environment by refraining from using plastic water bottles. Blake Lively says “we are trying to make a difference, because so many water bottles and cans are wasted. We all now bring our own mugs to the set.” Check out this video of the Gossip Girl stars promoting interesting facts and eco-friendly habits that you can use at home! But notice... Chase Crawford is missing from the commercials. Seriously Chase?

High school seniors will be rushing to the bookstores to pick up a copy of the Princeton Review in an attempt to discover which university fits them best. In addition to finding out which colleges have the best food, throw the best parties, or receive the biggest donations, they can also find out which colleges are the most environmentally-friendly.

Young people are not only concerned about whether or not they receive a good education but also about the well-being of the planet. Surrounding themselves with people who share this similar interest is proving to be an important factor in college decisions. In a 2008 survey conducted by the Princeton Review, 63% of 10,300 college applicants said that a college’s dedication to the environment could influence their decision to attend or apply.

Near the top of the “green rating” list are well-known universities like Arizona State, Harvard, Emory, and Yale.

Project Runway jumps on the eco-friendly fashion train

last week Natalie Portman made an appearance on the new season of Project Runway. The designers had the wonderful opportunity to use eco-friendly materials to create cocktail attire for their stunning models.
This number, designed by contestant Suede, was the winner of the challenge:

The panel of judges praised the dress and Natalie even said that she would wear it herself...REALLY? she cant be serious. I’m glad that eco-friendly fashion is getting publicity but this outfit looks like a candy striper ballerina.

For the longest time I have always wanted to visit Dubai. You can ski indoors, stay in a 7 star resort and shop until you crash (both you and your bank account) but now I have another reason to visit this gem in the middle east… BRAD PIT.

No they did not open a Madame Trusseu Wax museum in Dubai (although that wouldn’t be a bad idea) but long time design guru, Brad Pitt, has loaned his architectural skills to a new project.

Hunky man himself has been designated as the architect for a new and green resort in Dubai. The famous movie star and environmental activist will work GRAFT, a Los Angeles architecture firm, to create a five star hotel and resort complete with 800 rooms. In addition to the Dubai project, Pitt also has eco-friendly architecture projects in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward.

Green Fashion

Instead of buying a new outfit at the local department store, think about going green instead! Now you have the option of purchasing clothes that are comfortable, trendy, and best of all, eco-friendly.

Eco-friendly fashionistas can find clothes made out of recycled cashmere, hemp, silk, and even bamboo. As for accessories, Matt and Nat make handbags designed to look and feel like leather but are purely made of vegan material. They even have PETA’s nod of approval. Another designer, Kim White, designs bags made from fabric taken from vintage automobiles, which she pieces together to make a unique design.

So the next time you decide to go shopping just remember that you and the planet can look beautiful at the same time.

Be Wise, Be Rich

During summer months homeowners use more water than they should. Whether it be because they want to keep their lawns thriving or because they have twice as much dirty, sweaty laundry to clean than usual, all this excess water use takes a toll on the environment and water bills around the country.

Here are some good tips to reduce water use in your home:

• Make sure that all of your faucets, pipes, etc. are in tact and that they don’t have any leaks.
• If you choose not to line dry (although you should) put full loads in the washing machine. Same goes for dishwashers.
• Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth, lather your hands with soap, or shave. In other words, don’t leave the faucet running when you aren’t using it.
• Take short showers. As relaxing as a long shower may be, they waste tons of water. Treat yourself to a long shower/bubble bath once in a long while but limit the rest to under 5 minutes.
• Reuse towels and washcloths if you can.
• Use low-flow shower heads and low-flow toilets

By following these simple steps you will be see a significant decrease in your water bill and have a few extra bucks to spend elsewhere! CHA- CHING!

Green Makes It Squeaky Clean

Clorox, a company famed for its chlorine cleaning products, has teamed up with the Sierra Club to create a line of natural cleaning products called Green Works. They are made from all plant-based ingredients, not tested on animals, and are even packaged in recyclable bottles!

Although many environmentally friendly products are counteracted by their less than mediocre performance, in both lab and in-home consumer testing, Green Works products proved to work well or even better than traditional cleaning supplies. Products include an all-purpose cleaner, glass and surface cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, dilutable cleaner, and bathroom cleaner. Prices range from $2.99-$3.39.

Green Works also boasts that its ingredients are sustainable, non-allergenic and biodegradable meaning that while you’re cleaning you no longer have to worry about breathing in toxic fumes! (unless you like that kind of stuff)

The Green Works website also offers several easy tips on how to “go green” one of them being line drying! Others include recycling and using household appliances efficiently and only when necessary.

Projects like Green Works remind us that it doesn’t cost much or take much effort to help the environment! Now isnt that what ive been trying to say this WHOLE time?
