The increasingly fast pace of life is driven by a post-1945 myth that sitting behind a desk earning quarters for the Laundromat or dollars for upkeep, maintenance, and energy bills associated with owning a dryer will free us from the drudgery of housework. In fact, being outside with the birds and the neighbors, where your clothes get disinfected and your whites get bleached by the sun provides a meditative task, moderate exercise, and a change of pace. Project Laundry List has been working to make it easier for people to hang out their clothes since 1995. For instance, in the United States, millions of homeowners in associations are prohibited or severely restricted from hanging their clothes out. We work on spreading the word about Right to Dry legislation through our National Hanging Out Day events. Just yesterday, though, Gov. Linda Lingle of Hawaii announced she might veto legislation that would have provided more residents an opportunity to save money and energy by using a clothesline. Waddya have to say about that?
