Visited my daughter in NC and her clothes where hanging out in the clean mountain air, and they were sweet smelling as I folded laundry for 6 kids and parents. It was easier for her to hang the clothes outon the line, because with only one dryer she would have to dry for almost 2 days with constant checking, changing, storing the wet laundry waiting for the dryer.
I came home to Ca and told my husband I wanted a cloths line, and he had steel welded post with cross member on the top. I love hanging my clothes out. Towels, I throw in the dryer for 5 minutes and then hang on the line-they dry soft to touch. Sheets smell fresh and clean, no softeners. I am the only one in circle of friends and in my neighborhood with the lines. I have never been embarrassed or ashamed, nor have I offered any explanation nor have I given a thought to that. I just thought I had the freshest smelling towels and clothing. With all the talk about the high price of electricity and brown and black outs I started using my washer after 8 pm, the price is 1/2 the cost, plus the grid loves that. This past week we had a lot of rain and I used my dryer. It really felt strange to use that drying, but PG&E loved it. My clothes line is next to my gorgeous vegetable garden, both stand in the sun all day............lol LIFE IS WONDERFUL

I've been line drying my clothes for about 25 years, in a tiny apartment in NYC (hung everywhere, on all available spaces), on an actual clothesline in Woodstock, NY, and now, in LA, using a wire rack, etc. My clothes last longer, stay in better shape, smell good, AND I'm both helping the environment and saving money on electricity. I do usually dry towels in the dryer, but little else.
It's become a kind of meditation to hang the clothes...I actually enjoy it. Try throwing clothes over a rosemary bush - they smell wonderful!

It's me again. I should have mentioned, LOUDLY, cotton sheets, blouses, etc are line dried in about 15 min!!!!!!!!!!!!! Towels 1/2 hour! Clothes lines are great for the kids to make super tents on, for fun night sleeping. It can be very rustic for the imaginative kid and or parents.

So true! I hang mine on hangers on an inside retractible line over my laundry machines. When I do dry, it's delicate, which uses less energy (shorter, cooler cycle). Modern washers get clothes almost completely dry anyway, so they dry quickly even inside. And inside, there's no dust, sun fading or neighbors to complain. :) When you don't have space, a simple folding wood or wire drying rack will hold about half a load of clothes and can be purchased at most drugstores, Target, or online household stores. Try it in your shower or tub, or any other room where there's space. I line dry to keep my clothes in better condition, and it saves loads of energy. :)

I’ve just found this site and i’ll be returning :) Great stuff!
